WHAT
DOES BSCT DO?
- The primary concern has always been the work in secondary schools. This work is well established and appreciated by the schools. BSCT provides pastoral support to vulnerable pupils, those having friendship problems, those with low self-esteem, victims of bullying, those in danger of exclusion and others with anger management difficulties. BSCT workers have developed courses to help such pupils. Other work includes helping in RE, leading worship and running lunchtime clubs (known in each school as Emerge) where young Christians and those with no faith can meet to discuss and explore the Christian faith and support one another.
- Cottingham: A similar Trust was established in Cottingham in 2008 to provide a Christian worker in Cottingham High School. Since 2010 the two Trusts have worked together closely and BSCT has provided the schools’ worker. This work is fully funded by the Cottingham Churches.
- Primary Schools: BSCT Trustees are now keen to offer a service to primary schools. Cathy Beynon has a real vision for this and has obtained funding for a project to establish lunchtime clubs in primary schools in Beverley. Cathy, with the help of Jill Dolman and the support of BSCT, is supporting existing clubs in 2 primary schools with new clubs planned to start in 2 more schools early in the New Year. Other schools have shown an interest in this work and we look forward to further groups being established and growing, as resources permit.
- Transition and REaction: Towards the end of the Summer Term BSCT workers visit the local primary schools and talk to the children about their transition to secondary school. Each pupil is offered a booklet published by Scripture Union to help them as they embark on one of life’s greatest adventures. As part of the transition programme Year 6 and Year 7 pupils are also invited to a REaction day at Beverley Minster where they can meet each other and take part in activities which bring alive the Christian faith. The first REaction day took place in Beverley in 2002 and the 2012 theme, Olympic Spirit: Going for Gold, is bound to be as popular as ever with pupils. Light and Dark REaction days have recently taken place for children in Years 2 and 3 and a New Life theme for Year 4 and 5 pupils is being piloted in March. BSCT workers support REaction in Beverley.
- Colleges: The local colleges asked BSCT to provide pastoral support for some of their students. Phil Simpson has developed tutorial programmes on various aspects of Christianity and Christian Ethics. This work is funded by the colleges.
